City level winners of ‘Tata Building India School Essay Competition - 2010-11 from East Zone felicitated in Kolkata

Kolkata, December 22, 2011: The Tata Group recognized the city level winners of the East Zone leg of the 5th annual ‘Tata Building India School Essay Competition - 2010-11’, today, at Kalamandir. The winners were selected from a competitive pool of students from across 28 cities in the region, which included Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Bhagalpur, Patna, Gaya, Guwahati, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Dhanbad, Katwa, Kalyani, Bangaon, Basirhat, Bhatpara, Ulluberia, Purulia, Kalna, Coochbehar, Krishnanagar, Jalpaiguri, Nadia, and Barasat.

In the East Zone, the English edition of the Essay Competition was held across 40 cities in 1800 schools attracting nearly 10 lakh

students, the Bengali edition was held across 15 cities in 360 schools attracting nearly 1 lakh students and the Hindi edition was held across 27 cities in 1000 schools attracting nearly 5 lakh students.

The regional awards ceremony was held at Kalamandir in Kolkata and the chief guests, renowned author Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay and internationally acclaimed painter Shuvaprasanna Bhattacharya, awarded trophies and gift certificates to the winners. The winning essays at the city level will be further judged by a prominent jury for national level recognition.

The theme for the 2010-11 edition of the essay competition was ‘Poverty reduction’. The essay entries received from the enthusiastic participants featured thought provoking and inspiring ideas which clearly showcased the vision, compassion and conviction of today’s young Indians. 

About Tata Building India School Essay Competition 2010-2011

The Tata Building India School Essay Competition is one of the key initiatives undertaken by the Tata group of companies to motivate the youth of India towards thinking about nation building. The essay competition provides a unique platform to encourage young leaders of tomorrow to showcase their expressions in writing, on a host of subjects related to nation building.

Started in 2006 with 6 cities and 1 lakh students in English language, the competition has grown manifold to become India's largest essay competition touching almost 2 million students across 8 languages in 2010-11.

The current year program is set to yet again touch 2 million students in 5000+ schools nationwide. The idea of the competition has been very well received by both the students and the teaching fraternity reflected by the overwhelming response from participating schools and students.  It is the belief of the Tata group of companies that the young minds of the country, if directed positively, can bring greater recognition and glory to the nation.

Top seed  Alamsyah Yunus of Indonesia prevented Indians from claiming a grand double, defeating second seed Indian R V M Gurusaidutt  in a close fought men’s singles final match of the USD 1125 prize money Tata Open India International Challenge 2011, organised by the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, on Sunday 18 th Jan 2011 at Mumbai.

The women’s singles crown was won by second seed P V Sindhu, who rallied after dropping a game to eight seed Sayali Gokhale  This was her third straight win over Sayali and Sindhu won USD 1125 for her efforts, while Sayali had to be content with USD 570.

India tasted further success, in the men’s doubles, with Pranav Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar defeating the top seeded pair of Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas (IND)

Tata group felicitates the National Winners of ‘Tata Building India School Essay Competition 2010’

Mumbai, October 12, 2011: Tata group felicitated the National Winners of ‘Tata Building India - School Essay Competition 2009-10’ this week, at a ceremony held at The Taj Mahal Hotel, Mansingh Road , New Delhi. The Chief Guest for the day, Dr. E Sreedharan, Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) awarded the young achievers with the prestigious trophy and laptop computers. Prior to that the national winners and the runners-up got a unique opportunity to visit the Rashtrapati Bhavan and also had a tour of the Delhi metro and its museum.

Tata Building India is a unique initiative which gives young students a platform to pen down their thoughts and ideas on national development. Launched in 2006, it is India’s largest essay competition that has inspired over 5 million students from class 6th to 12th during last 5 years. Going from strength to strength, this competition currently spans across 150 cities in India in 8 different languages (English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Oriya and Tamil).

The 2009-10 edition of the competition, the fourth edition, saw enthusiastic participation from over 2 million students from 3500 schools across nearly 100 cities and was conducted in 6 languages. The English round of the competition had close to 10 Lakh students from 1500 English medium schools across 36 major cities whereas the Hindi round covered 18 cities across North & Central India and attracted close to 4 lakh entries from 600 Hindi medium schools. Further, the competition was run in Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil and Marathi languages in those langauge medium schools in 12-14 cities each in the respective states where the language is widely spoken.

The theme for this competition was ‘Future India’, which is inspired by JRD Tata’s vision of a Happy India. The winning essays featured impactful, thought provoking and radical ideas where in the thoughts clearly indicate the vision and focus of young minds of today’s generation.

Felicitating the winners, Dr. E Sreedharan, Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said “I congratulate the winners of Tata Building India – School Essay Competition on getting the awards. I must complement the Tata Group for instituting such a wonderful program to inspire the young minds of the country.”

The Tata Building India School Essay Competition is a two-phase activity across all the participating schools in the country. The first phase consists of exposure of inspirational material, consisting screening of Tata-linked films, which is used as stimulus for the young minds to think of the nation.

Following the screening, children from Class 6 to Class 12 are asked to write essays on topics of national significance in the respective languages.

To ensure level playing field, the entries for the competition were divided into two levels – Junior level- std. 6-8 and Senior level- std.9-12 (for the English competition, Senior category was divided into two parts – Middle for std. 9-10 and Senior for std. 11-12). These essays were shortlisted first at the school level by the teachers, and thereafter were evaluated through a panel of independent local academia/journalist to declare the City level winners. Finally, at the national/state level an eminent panel of judges from the fields of media & academia assessed the city winner essays to determine the final national/state winners.

The Chief Guest for the day, Mr. Bharat Wakhlu, Resident Director-Tata Services awarded the young achievers with the prestigious trophy and a laptop each. The high-point of the achievement of these winners was the once in a lifetime opportunity that they got to interact with the Vice President of India, Shri Mohammad Hamid Ansari along with a guided tour of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Tata Building India is a unique competition which gives young students a platform to pen down their thoughts and ideas on nation development. Launched in 2006, it is India's largest essay competition that has inspired over 3 million students from class 6th to 12th during last 4 years. Going from strength to strength, this competition currently spans across 100 cities in India in 6 different languages (English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, and Tamil) covering over 3500 schools. The 2008-09 edition of the competition, the third edition saw enthusiastic participation from over 8.5 lakh students, from 1250 schools across 36 cities in English & Hindi languages. The English round of the competition had close to 5.75 lakh students from 800 English medium schools across 24 major cities whereas the Hindi round covered 12 cities across North & Central India and attracted close to 3 lakh entries from 400 Hindi medium schools.

The theme for this competition was 'Happy Country', which is inspired by JRD Tata's vision of a Happy India. The topic given to the participants was 'your suggestion on what would you do to make India a Happy Country'. The winning essays featured impactful, thought provoking and radical ideas like 'working towards not only a casteless society but a classless society will build a happy country' or 'teamwork among citizens can help us achieve more'. These thoughts clearly indicate the vision and focus of young minds of today's generation. Felicitating the winners, Mr. Wakhlu said," Tata Building India Essay competition is a unique initiative that endeavours to connect with young minds and leaders of tomorrow to encourage them to think on the lines of nation building. We are delighted to see the enthusiastic response received from across the country. The patriotic spirit in the hearts and minds of these little masters along with their significant talent will go a long way in placing India as a superpower on the world map."

Emphasizing the needs of harmony and values in his interaction with the students, Shri Mohammad Hamid Ansari the Vice President of India said, "Being happy is a basic human need. Youth today have many more opportunities but also much more responsibility. Habits to live by law, being respectful to others' dignity, and integrity to self are important. A Happy Society is one in which you accommodate each other so that it can move forward. 'Marching together' is inclusive growth, with synchronizing of individual efforts". He added that, "We are in a stage of evolution where boundaries are receding and ideas can benefit humankind irrespective of which country you are in. Therefore you have to start thinking in terms of humanity and human values, removing all barriers of race, colour, nationality, etc."

The competition was conducted over two sessions in individual schools. In the first session, the children were shown a special film made by the noted filmmaker Zafar Hai titled "Keepers of the flame" on the lives of Jamsetji Tata, JRD Tata and Naval Tata or a new film 'Crucible of Fire', which chronicles the inspiring story of Tata Steel's 100 year journey that has shaped the industrial history of India. In the second session students were asked to write an essay of 500 words on a topic related to nation building, which in 2008-09 was "Your suggestions on what you would do to make India a happy country".

To ensure level playing field, the entries for the competition were divided into three levels - junior level (std. 6-8), middle level (std.9-10) and upper level (std. 11-12) for English and two levels in Hindi Junior (Std 6-8th) & Senior (Std 9th-12th). These essays were shortlisted first at the school level by the teachers, and thereafter, evaluated through a panel of independent local academia/journalist to declare School level & City level winners & finally at the national level. An eminent panel of national judges from the fields of media & academia shortlisted the final winners. For the English competition, the panel comprised of Anil Dharker, Dileep Padgaonkar, Prof. Prabhat K Pandeya whereas for Hindi competition the renowned panel from the world of literature & academia included Dr. Hare Ram Acharya, M.C. Pant & Yashwant Vyas.
